The holiday season is a time to celebrate and spread feelings of happiness and joy to all those around you. Holidays represent a chance to take a break from work, see the world, reconnect with family and friends, and ultimately enjoy time with your loved ones. Given the nature of the season, studies have shown that most people are happier during the holidays than they are at any other time throughout the year.
With that said, there is always a chance that a case of the “holiday blues” can sneak up on you though. To avoid feeling the “holiday blues,” here are some tips to keep yourself happy during the holidays:
Be in the moment. All year around you may expend a lot of time either thinking about the future, or remaining stuck on issues from the past. Sometimes that can prevent you from living in the moment, which could cause you to miss what is happening in the now. Try shutting off your TV, computer, or cell phone, and slow down. This will help you pay attention to the small things around you. Those that are mindful of their surroundings are known to be more secure, have higher self-esteem, and be happier.
Focus on what’s important to you. Don’t get caught up in the whole gift giving process. Remember, the holidays are not all about giving or receiving the perfect gift. It’s about connecting with loved ones, creating new memories, and doing the things you always wanted to but never have time for.
Socialize. It’s a proven fact that people tend to be happier around others. Holidays bring together friends and family who you may not otherwise have time for in your busy schedule. It’s important to make more time throughout the year to be around people that make you happy.
Give the gift of experience. People are happier when they receive a gift that they can experience as opposed to material gifts. So if you or someone close to you is feeling unhappy during the holidays, consider treating yourself and a friend to an experience like a concert, comedy show, or even a road trip to a place you’ve never been before.
Be festive. Get yourself in the holiday mood by playing your favorite holiday songs and cooking your favorite meal. If that doesn’t do the trick, try burning holiday scented candles and filling your home with over-the-top decorations.
Now that you’ve read all of the tips for staying happy during the holidays, it’s time to put them into action!
