September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September 6, 2023

Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among American men, and the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. About 1 out of 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the American Cancer Society estimates there will be nearly 300,000 new cases of prostate cancer in 2023.

Fortunately, prostate cancer screenings are good predictors of your risk of developing prostate cancer, and it is more curable when caught early. Memorial Sloan Kettering recommends getting a prostate-specific antigen (“PSA”) blood test at around age 45.

To help educate our members more on prostate cancer and the importance of screening, the NYCDCC Welfare Fund has compiled several helpful resources. You can learn more by reading the attached flyer, and by visiting the resource links below.

The NYCDCC Welfare Fund partners with Memorial Sloan Kettering to offer MSK Direct, a program that gives you guided access to expert cancer care. They provide resources and support throughout your care experience. To learn more about prostate cancer and screenings, as well as other cancer care related topics, visit the MSK Direct website for the NYCDCC Welfare Fund at www.mskcc.org/direct/nycdcc-welfare-fund/prostate-screening. If you or a loved one are impacted by cancer and would like to discuss treatment options available at MSK, please call the dedicated MSK Direct phone line for the NYCDCC Welfare Fund at (833) 786-3368.
