The Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening

The Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening

March 10, 2025

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and the NYCDCCBF would like to share information with our members so they can make informed decisions regarding their health.

By 2030, colorectal cancer in people under age 50 is expected to nearly double. Fortunately, 9 out of 10 people survive colorectal cancer when it is found and treated early. Because this cancer is easier to treat when found early, Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) recommends that people at average risk for colorectal cancer begin getting screened at 45. MSK recommends that people at higher risk speak with their healthcare provider about when to begin screening.

Learn More About Colorectal Cancer with MSK Direct
The NYCDCC Welfare Fund has a partnership with MSK Direct to provide members and their families the highest-quality cancer programs and services, virtually and in-person. As part of this partnership, MSK offers NYCDCC members free resources to learn about all kinds of cancers, including colorectal cancer.

We encourage you to read this digital brochure, “What You Can Do To Prevent Colorectal Cancer,” which addresses risk factors, symptoms, colonoscopies, and other screening methods. We also encourage you to speak to your healthcare provider about the course of action that might be best for you.
